As the Head of Department/Operations, you will be responsible for end‑to‑end performance, governance, and strategic development of a highly technical back‑office operation. You will focus on resolving complex SAP‑related errors and exceptions. You will drive exceptional client outcomes, strong commercial performance, full regulatory compliance, and the development of a high‑performing, technically capable leadership team.

You will implement effective oversight of complex SAP data flows, automation, reconciliation, and quality control within high‑consequence processes. You will report directly to the Associate Director.

A bit more about the Opportunity...

What Your Day-to-Day Will Look Like:

💻You will build strong, long‑term client relationships by consistently delivering on commitments and understanding their goals. You serve as the senior operational contact, ensuring strong governance, transparent communication, and proactive issue resolution. You align operational delivery with contractual obligations and manage SLAs, reporting, and risk to protect service continuity.

 

You will focus on managing overall operational performance, leading capacity planning, workload allocation, and productivity optimization. You will drive continuous improvement to reduce processing time, improve quality, and eliminate rework. You will also oversee operational budgets and gross profit, working with Finance and Commercial teams to balance cost, efficiency, and revenue. You will collaborate across HR, IT, Finance, and Engineering to ensure operations support strategic objectives. You will use data, SQL, and advanced Excel to analyze performance, identify issues, and guide improvements, while staying hands‑on with detailed account‑level information.

You will work closely with Development, Engineering, and BI teams to identify and deliver automation that improves accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. You will translate operational needs into clear technical requirements and lead UAT, change control, and deployment activities. You will implement strong control frameworks—data validation, exception handling, reconciliations, and audit trails—to minimize errors. You will also apply SAP knowledge to improve processes, reporting, and data integrity.

You will provide clear, inclusive leadership to the Operations Manager and broader team, fostering a high‑performance culture aligned to the Always Improving Performance Framework. You coach and develop future leaders, ensuring strong succession planning.

You will focus on maintaining accountability for performance, quality, and compliance through accurate reporting. You manage attendance, performance, and disciplinary matters while supporting a positive and engaged work environment.

You are an out-of-the-box thinker with a solid understanding of business objectives, and you can plan strategically and execute operationally through delivering results that aligns with Sigma’s values.

Requirements:

  • You have a minimum 5 years’ management experience within a back‑office environment, minimum 2 years’ experience of SAP within a regulated sector/industry.
  • You have a Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification
  • You have proven experience leading complex operational teams delivering against demanding SLAs and contractual commitments.
  • You have strong commercial acumen, including ownership of budgets, productivity, and gross profit.
  • You have advanced Excel capability and hands‑on SQL experience, with the ability to extract and analyse operational data to generate actionable insight.
  • You have a strong understanding of SAP data models and the flow of master and transactional data across back‑office processes.
  • You have experience interpreting complex datasets and working in partnership with BI teams to deliver accurate, meaningful dashboards and performance reporting.
  • You can identify, prioritise, and deliver automation and process improvement initiatives supported by clear business cases.
  • You can translate business and operational requirements into technical designs and automation workflows.
  • You have strong communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders or clients and explain complex technical concepts clearly.
